Some places are beautiful at any time of day.
Coconut Tree Hill is beautiful because, for a short time each evening,
everything comes together.
The palms turn into dark silhouettes.
The Indian Ocean stretches endlessly towards the horizon.
The light becomes softer.
And people begin to gather.
I went there for sunset.
The first time, I understood immediately why so many others had come too.
A hill above the sea
Coconut Tree Hill is one of the most recognisable viewpoints in Mirissa.
The hill rises above the Indian Ocean, surrounded by tall coconut palms and open views of Sri Lanka’s southern coastline. There is no complicated itinerary here and no long list of things to see.
You come for one simple reason.
The view.
During the day, it is easy to see why the place has become so popular. But as the afternoon begins to fade, the atmosphere changes.
People start arriving.
Some find a place to sit.
Others stand along the edge, looking out towards the sea.
Everyone seems to be waiting for
the same thing.
The first evening
The first time I watched the sunset from Coconut Tree Hill, there were already plenty
of people there.
Many were standing, facing the ocean, cameras and phones ready but almost unnecessary once the sky began to change.
And then it happened.
The colours grew warmer.
The light spread across the water.
The palms became dark against the horizon.
And all around me, people were watching in complete fascination.
There was a feeling of shared excitement — strangers standing together, looking towards the same horizon, knowing that they were watching something special.
Everyone was impressed.
And honestly, so was I.
It was one of the most beautiful sunsets I saw in Sri Lanka.
The kind of view you remember long after the day itself is over.
The kind that makes you think:
I want to see that again.
So the next day, I came back.
The second attempt
This time, I had a plan.
I knew how beautiful the sunset could be, so I decided to arrive much earlier and find a good place before the crowds appeared.
I got there early.
Very early.
I found my spot and settled in.
And then I waited.
For around an hour and a half.
But I did not mind.
I had seen what Coconut Tree Hill could look like the day before, and I was convinced that the wait would be worth it again.
The evening looked promising.
The ocean was in front of me.
The sun was slowly moving
towards the horizon.
Everything seemed to be going
exactly as planned.
Until it wasn’t.
Then the clouds arrived
Just before sunset, the clouds appeared.
Of course they did.
After an hour and a half of waiting.
There was nothing I could do but watch as the sky slowly changed in a completely different way from the evening before.
The perfect view I had come back for never really arrived.
And that is the thing about sunsets.
You can choose the right place.
You can arrive at exactly the right time.
You can wait as long as you want.
But you cannot control the sky.
One day, it gives
you something unforgettable.
The next, the clouds arrive at exactly the wrong moment.
Still worth chasing
And yet, I would go back again.
Because I had already seen how beautiful it could be.
That first evening was enough to make the second
attempt completely understandable.
Coconut Tree Hill is not about checking an attraction off a list.
It is about being there at the right moment.
Or trying to be.
There is something special about watching the same place change
as the light disappears.
The ocean stays.
The palms stay.
The hill stays.
But the sky decides what kind of evening you are going to have.
And sometimes, it decides to surprise you.
Why Coconut Tree Hill stayed with me
I remember the first sunset most of all.
The people gathered around me.
Everyone standing and watching.
The excitement as the colours
began to change.
The feeling that, for a few minutes, nobody wanted to be anywhere else.
But I remember the second day too.
Coming back earlier.
Finding my place.
Waiting for an hour and a half because I knew what I had seen the day before.
And then watching the clouds arrive just before the moment I had been waiting for.
Strangely, I think that is part of why the place stayed with me.
The first evening gave me the sunset
I came for.
The second reminded me that you cannot plan everything.
Sometimes you return to a place hoping to repeat a perfect moment.
And sometimes you don’t get it.
But that does not make the first one
any less beautiful.
If anything, it makes you appreciate
it even more.
Coconut Tree Hill gave me one of the most beautiful sunsets of my time in Sri Lanka.
The second day, it gave me a different
kind of memory.
Both were worth keeping.
